Maintainability

The maintainability of a system is strongly influenced by the structure of the system itself and by the system operation; Italconsul performs system maintenance analyses both in the civil and defense fields.

Maintainability analysis for Defense Systems

For defense systems, generally characterized by long lasting missions, usually the adopted maintenance strategy is to minimize the risk of corrective maintenance of the most critical parts through the use of predictive maintenance and by redunding some components.

Italconsul is able to perform maintainability analyses at the maintenance levels envisaged, as defined in the maintenance concept and on the basis of the contractual quality requirements which generally include:

  • human engineering requirements

  • requirements on the maintenance activities to be performed or not

  • qualitive requirements on testability and built-in-test

  • and quantitative contractual requirements, generally expressed in MTTR length.

In addition, Italconsul performs maintainability predictions at the applicable maintenance levels, based on the execution times of the diagnostic tests and on the estimated times of the part replacement, from "Procedure V" of the MIL-HDBK-472 (or of the MIL-HDBK-470 Appendix D) .

Maintainability analysis for Civil Systems (Railways and Metro Systems)

In the civil field, the system operation generally involves frequent stops and short lasting missions; periodic maintenance is scheduled to be performed, for example, during non operating times. Part redundancy is rarely used except for the security functions.

Italconsul performs maintainability analyses at the various maintenance levels envisaged, applicable on the basis of both qualitative and quantitative contractual requirements. The maintainability analysis is then used as a starting point for preventive and corrective maintenance analyses.

During the whole life cycle of a system / subsystem / device, Italconsul performs all the maintainability analyses in accordance with the requirements of the EN 50126 standard which deals with the specification and demonstration of Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) for Railway applications.
